Quick Hurricane Note 8/28/05

I wanted to let everyone know that my son is safely home from New Orleans. I've been watching Katrina very closely since Friday morning, and saw the gradual changes in the computer models over the course of Friday, as she emerged into the Gulf headed SW instead of W or NW, to everyone's surprise. I warned him Friday afternoon that he needed to get ready to evacuate and they were packed, gased and ready to pull out yesterday (Saturday) as soon as the University canceled Monday's scheduled first day of classes. They got home (he and roommate and two friends, one from Shreveport and another from Boston) for this little "vacation" before school starts. He brought a few clothes, his PowerBook and his electric mandolin, leaving the acoustic mandolin high up on a closet shelf of their main floor apartment in a three story house a block off of St. Charles Avenue in the middle Garden District. He lives north and east and west of the Mississippi River. We are aware that he may not have a home or a school there, after this is over. To those of us in our little blogging community who may be in harm's way I say, God bless you. Take care of yourselves. Leave, if you must. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
